UPDATE (November 18, 2012): Google Play Store updated to version 3.10.9. Download from here.

It’s been over a month since Google last updated their Google Play app for android devices, but no more – the company just updated their beloved Google Play store app to new version, 3.9.16. The Google Play 3.9.16’s APK file is available for you to download and install manually on your android device. You can find the installation instructions below, but first let’s see the new feature Google Play Store 3.9.16 has brought.

The new v3.9.16 of Google Play introduces some cool new features, such as, ability to remove apps from the All Apps list under My Apps in Google Play store app, and it now uses the expandable notification function, but of course, you have to be on Jelly Bean to be able to make use of that.

So, in those frustrating cases, where you try a new app and uninstall it in seconds once you come to know that you hate the UI and all that, you can now remove that app from appearing in All Apps list, which wasn’t possible hitherto.

More on the new features to be posted later. For now, let’s check out the installation guide to install the latest Google Play Store APK, v3.9.16, on your android device.

How to Install Google Play APK 3.9.16

  1. Let’s begin with downloading the Google Play APK 3.9.16. Filename: gglply3.9.16.apk
  2. Transfer the Google Play APK file to phone if you downloaded it on PC and remember the location.
  3. In order to install an app using its installation file in .apk format from phone’s sdcard or internal memory, you first need to enable that from settings. For this, if you are Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above, go to Settings » Security and enable ‘Unknown Sources’. For Android 2.3 and below, go to Settings » Application » enable the ‘Unknown Sources’ .
  4. You will need a file explorer to go to folder where you downloaded APK on phone or transferred it from PC. We would recommend the Solid Explorer App, however any file manager would do fine. Now, open the file explorer app and go to folder where you downloaded/transferred the Google Play APK file. (Btw, if you downloaded it on phone, it should be in Download folder).
  5. Now, tap on the Google Play APK file – gglplay3.9.16.apk – to begin installation and you will be done in less than a minute.

That’s it. You now have the Google Play’s latest version installed with the help of an APK file, without waiting for Google to push it to Play Store app on your android device. And it was easy, right? Let us know if you need any help over this.

  1. Won’t open on my memupslide ng9716 starts to open then closes, help please.

    1. In order to make this work, your android device must be a Google certified one. Did you have the Market or Play Store app before? If it didn’t it’s not certified device, and thus, sadly, you won’t be able to install Google Play 3.9.16 on your device. That’s a concern for those looking buy android devices from less popular companies.

Android devices from popular companies like Samsung, LG, HTC, etc. are certified and thus support Google Play Store and thus apk can be installed manually too in this case.

    2. Pretty sure that you have to rename, or remove the existing Google play apk, before you can install this one.

  9. I have an HTC Incredible S, which I bought in China (where I live). For the last 18 months, I’ve been trying to get access to Google Play apps to no avail. Since HTC is/was a fairly significant player in the Android phone market, I am at a loss why I can’t install this app on what I think is a fairly popular device. I can use the HTC Market place, but that there are a number of apps that I’d like to have that aren’t available on this rather limited app source. Any ideas or do I just scrap the phone and HTC along with it?
